Today is “Spotify Day” at NoWare…
It is official. Spotify launched this morning. We can stop holding our breath.
While we think this is a pretty big deal, many are wondering why they should get excited about another streaming music service. Well, Spotify seems to be launching to much fan-fare and recognition. We’ve watched their Facebook likes go from 1,000 to over 5,000 in the last hour…
Already popular in Europe, there has been speculation in the US press for years about when and how Spotify would come to America. And, with marketing support from Chevy, Klout, and other partners, we hope that this initiative will further raise the profile for subscription based music. More awareness, more listeners, and more users will help independents the world over.
Its only getting harder to sell albums. But maybe, just maybe, with a portal like Spotify, a free ad-supported system that increases the accessibility to hear great music, casual listeners will become rabid fans. Rabid fans are then more likely to attend concerts and then buy deluxe vinyl additions and other merchandise.
Will this be the a great democratizer in the music business? Its probably too early to tell, although Spotify is aiming high with a reported goal of hitting 50,000,000 US users within the next several years.
We wish them luck. Anything that helps the next undiscovered talent get heard, benefits us all.
Now the real question- what should we listen to next?
